FAQs

Lip filler results typically last about one year, though the longevity depends on several factors, including:

  • Type of filler: Some fillers last only six months, while others can last as long as a year and a half.
  • Injector experience + training: The more skilled your injector is, the more likely you’ll see long-lasting results.
  • Body chemistry: Your metabolism plays a role in how long you’ll see results from lip fillers. The faster your body breaks down the hyaluronic acid, the less time the filler will last. On the other hand, if your body is slow to break down filler, you’ll likely see plump, full lips for a longer period.
  • Lifestyle: People who smoke, get a lot of direct sunlight, and lead an extremely active lifestyle may see less longevity from their lip filler injections since all of these factors may contribute to the more rapid breakdown of filler.

Everyone’s body reacts differently to lip filler. Talk to your injector to get a better idea of how long your results may last. You can also schedule maintenance appointments as soon as you notice a reduction in the results, such as volume change or wrinkles beginning to reappear near your lips. Follow-up sessions will help avoid any significant changes to the look of your lips.

Ideally, you should eat something before you come in for your lip filler session since it will be a few hours before you can eat afterward. Once you’ve waited three or four hours, you can enjoy whatever snack or meal you choose. However, you should avoid anything too salty, greasy, spicy, or hard to chew since all of these foods can irritate your injection sites and possibly affect the results of your injections.

If your lips seem swollen or are causing some discomfort after injections, try a diet of soft foods for a day or two until the swelling decreases. Once you feel comfortable doing so, you can slowly start enjoying the foods you regularly eat.

Long recovery isn’t usually an issue with lip fillers. Many people can get back to their routines after one to two days. Your injector will give you aftercare instructions, including avoiding strenuous exercise, touching your lips, and applying makeup for 24 to 48 hours post-session.

Additional tips to help you recover quickly and extend the life of your filler include things like:

  • Spend the first week sleeping with your head and shoulders propped up on a couple of pillows. You should lie on your back to avoid putting pressure on your lips and potentially displacing the filler.
  • Don’t take any blood-thinning medications or over-the-counter painkillers. If you need a pain reliever after your injections, use acetaminophen instead of aspirin or ibuprofen.
  • Avoid hot showers, baths, and saunas for the first two days after filler injections. Heat makes your blood vessels expand and can cause more bruising and swelling.
  • Try to schedule your lip filler session at a time when you won’t have to travel by plane for at least a week. The altitude change can affect your results and recovery.
  • Stick to a healthy diet and low-sodium foods after your injections. Salty foods can increase swelling and irritate the injection sites near your mouth, so it’s best to avoid anything too salty for at least a few days to a week post-session.
  • If you have any irritation after your filler session, try a cream to ease the discomfort. Make sure you choose something with ingredients like vitamin K and aloe vera or (even better) a mix of the two for the best effect.

A lip filler session and a lip flip are two different treatments. Lip filler injections focus on volumizing your lips, giving them a full, plump look. During a lip flip, your injector will use Botox instead of filler for your session. With strategic injections, your provider uses the neuromodulator to relax the muscles around your upper lip. These Botox injections can make your top lip appear bigger, and your mouth look fuller.
